In September 2024, roughly 200,000 WP Engine sites were cut off from WordPress.org plugin and theme updates. A California court restored their access in December. The lawsuit is still open in 2026.

WP Engine prices honestly — that isn’t the pitch. Their Startup plan is $25/month on annual billing, $30/month monthly, for one site.1 The four-months-free promo pulls the effective first-year rate down to about $13.33/month, which reads as a ~1.9x renewal jump — mild compared to the 6x hikes on shared hosting.1 Their daily backups are included, their migration plugin is free, their support is technically competent.

The reason to leave WP Engine, if you leave, is that the ground under WP Engine has been unstable since Automattic’s Matt Mullenweg banned them from WordPress.org on September 25, 2024. For over a week, ~200,000 WP Engine sites couldn’t reach plugin or theme updates through the normal channel.2 A California district court ordered Automattic to restore access on December 10, 2024.3 Automattic then filed counterclaims alleging trademark misuse on October 24, 2025.4 The case is still open. Silver Lake, WP Engine’s majority owner since a $250M investment in 2018,5 hasn’t ended it.

Why we wrote this page.

WP Engine is not a rip-off host. Their pricing math is close to fair. If we thought otherwise we would say so — the whole brand is called Candor.

What we do think is that a hosting substrate should be boring. The seventy-six days between September 25 and December 10, 2024, when a court intervened, weren’t boring for WP Engine customers.23 Neither was Automattic forking Advanced Custom Fields into “Secure Custom Fields” and taking over the wp.org listing.8 Neither is a still-open counterclaim.4 WordPress’s total-web share fell from 43.2% in December 2025 to 41.9% in May 2026 — six consecutive months of decline, correlated by press with the dispute.9

You don’t have to have a strong opinion about who’s right in that fight. You just have to notice that if your host is a party to it, so are you.

Candor Host is not a party to it. At the low end, yes. WP Engine Startup is $25/month on annual billing, $30/month monthly, for one site. Candor Solo is $15/month for one site at signup and at every renewal after. Over three years on annual billing that is $900 versus $540 — a $360 gap. Sources cited above.

What is the WP Engine dispute with WordPress.org?

Do I need to worry about that dispute if my site is small?

You inherit the platform's variables. When WP Engine's WordPress.org access was cut off, sites of every size on the platform lost the normal plugin update path until a court intervened. Choosing a host that isn't a party to that dispute removes it as a variable.

How is Candor Host's isolation different from WP Engine's?

Both use container isolation. Candor publishes a hard density cap — 150 sites per server — with a live count on the homepage. WP Engine does not publish density.

Who owns Candor Host?

R Software & Consulting LLC, a small independent company based in Jacksonville, Florida. No private equity, no platform dispute, no absent parent. We'd rather this get judged on the product than on personalities.

What if I'm still mid-contract with WP Engine?

Move now, keep WP Engine running until your term ends. We'll stage the migration on Candor at a preview URL and only flip DNS when you approve. Nothing changes on your end until you say so.

Will my site go down during the migration?

The goal is zero downtime. We copy files and database, stand the site up behind a preview URL, and only change DNS after your review. We lower the TTL 24 hours before the switch so propagation is under an hour.

What is Candor Host's refund policy?

30 days, full refund of hosting fees, regardless of billing term. Migration is included on every plan; if we can't migrate you cleanly, cancel inside your 30-day money-back window for a full refund.

What happens if Candor Host ever raises prices?

Existing customers keep the rate they signed up at. If we ever change published pricing, it applies to new sign-ups only. That's a written commitment in the terms and it's the whole reason the brand is called Candor.
